Interlocking Troubleshooting Review


Troubleshooting an interlocking can be complex because switches, signals, track circuits, power systems, wiring, communications, and interlocking logic all work together. A problem in one part of the system can affect the operation of the entire interlocking.

Common problems include malfunctioning switches or signals, faulty interlocking logic, power outages, communication failures, wiring problems, and track circuit failures. A systematic troubleshooting method is needed to safely locate and correct these issues.

One common technique is to isolate the problem area by dividing the interlocking into smaller sections and testing each component individually. This may include checking wiring, verifying switch operation, testing signal aspects, reviewing track circuit indications, and using diagnostic tools.

Computerized fault-finding systems can also help speed up troubleshooting. These systems may analyze alarms, sensor data, event logs, and equipment status to identify the source of a problem more quickly.

Regular maintenance and inspections help prevent interlocking problems before they occur. This includes inspecting switches and signals, checking wiring integrity, cleaning equipment, testing logic, performing periodic tests, and documenting results.
